T\u00e9cnicamente, la glucosa posee energ\u00eda potencial qu\u00edmica debido a la disposici\u00f3n espec\u00edfica de sus \u00e1tomos. Durante la respiraci\u00f3n celular, estos enlaces se rompen y los \u00e1tomos se oxidan en compuestos de menor energ\u00eda (di\u00f3xido de carbono y agua).
