Tecnicamente, il glucosio possiede energia chimica potenziale grazie alla disposizione specifica dei suoi atomi. Durante la respirazione cellulare, questi legami vengono spezzati e gli atomi vengono ossidati in composti a bassa energia (anidride carbonica e acqua).
