Calories in maltodextrin: Energy per Gram

ニュース記事 2610

The calories in ordinary digestible maltodextrin are usually estimated using a common nutritional calculation factor of about 4 kcal/g. When reading “calories in maltodextrin”, it is important to distinguish whether this value refers to the estimated value per gram of raw materials or the total calories per serving of a maltodextrin-containing product; the latter must also be determined based on the actual product composition, dosage per serving, and corresponding label.

Estimated diameter of ordinary maltodextrin

Maltodextrin is a mixture of D-glucose oligomers and polymers formed after the partial hydrolysis of edible starch. It is neither free glucose nor a single pure molecule. Ordinary digestible maltodextrin mainly provides carbohydrates and is calculated based on the nutrient conversion factor of digestible carbon water; this estimate indicates energy caliber and is not an indicator of digestion speed. Organic, non-GMO, corn or cassava sources do not automatically alter the fundamental properties of this digestible carbohydrate.

The polymer chain contains multiple glucose units, but a long structure does not directly indicate slow digestion or continuous energy supply. Ordinary digestible maltodextrin can be gradually hydrolyzed into glucose by digestive enzymes and absorbed in the small intestine. Its glycemic index does not have a single value applicable to all raw materials, DE, molecular distribution, dosage and food matrix, and the actual postprandial response is also affected by the formulation, nutrition of the same meal and individual status.

How to use finished product labels

Protein powders, vitamins, and dietary supplements may incorporate maltodextrin as a nutritional carbohydrate, or they may be used as a carrier, filler, granulation, or ingredient to improve flowability. The uses and formulations of each product differ, and it is not possible to assume a uniform addition amount based on product category; the product name or description “containing maltodextrin” will not give the actual number of grams.

If a finished product contains 10 grams of regular, digestible maltodextrin, you can estimate that this ingredient contributes approximately 40 kilocalories (based on about 4 kcal per gram), but this does not represent the total caloric content of the entire food item. The serving size listed on the label represents the reference portion for the entire food product, not the weight of maltodextrin; the values per serving must be interpreted in conjunction with the product’s ingredients, the recommended serving size, and the corresponding nutrition facts label.

In the U.S. general food ingredient list, ingredients are usually arranged from highest to lowest weight when added. The order is only shown in relative order and does not provide specific grams. Total carbohydrates, total sugars, and added sugars on nutrition labels are not the same item: ordinary maltodextrin is included in the total carbohydrates on the US label. The calculation of added sugars after the mono- and disaccharides produced by its hydrolysis are added to food has a different scope. The total grams of maltodextrin cannot be directly regarded as total sugars or added sugar grams. Labelling rules may differ in other markets, and readings should be taken based on the labeling of the corresponding product and sales region.

Resistance type needs to be listed separately

Ordinary digestible maltodextrin is not dietary fiber. Resistant maltodextrin or resistant dextrin contains non-digestible components that can be processed differently from ordinary types using carbohydrates, energy, and dietary fiber. Similar names do not mean the same nutritional content, and estimates for ordinary maltodextrin cannot be directly applied; for antagonistic products, the corresponding nutritional information should be verified.
